Am 4. April 1977 verunglückte eine Douglas DC-9-31 auf dem Southern-Airways-Flug 242, nachdem beide Triebwerke beim Durchfliegen eines schweren Gewitters ausgefallen waren. Die Besatzung entschied sich situationsbedingt für eine Notlandung auf einer zweispurigen Hauptverkehrsstraße (Highway) im Paulding County (Georgia), wobei die anfliegende Maschine zunächst mit den Tragflächen mehrere Bäume streifte.
