1985 murder of a police officer in South Carolina
On September 27, 1985, in Jasper County, South Carolina, 30-year-old Bruce Kenneth Smalls, a state police trooper, was shot and murdered in the line of duty by Richard Charles Johnson, who was also involved in the murder of a Virginia businessman. Johnson and two other people were charged with the murder, but only Johnson was convicted of Smalls's murder.
