On June 2, 2017, at 12:03 a.m. PhST (GMT+8), a gunman attacked Resorts World Manila and started fires, causing a stampede which killed 38 people and injured 70 others. Initially thought to be a terrorist attack related to the Marawi crisis in Mindanao, the attack was instead an armed robbery by 42-year-old Jessie Javier Carlos, a former Filipino civil servant. Carlos stole casino chips worth ₱113 million.
