1639 battle of the Eighty Years' War
The Battle of the Downs, 21 October 1639, took place during the Eighty Years' War. A Spanish fleet commanded by Antonio de Oquendo was defeated by a Dutch force under Maarten Tromp, a victory that confirmed Dutch control of the English Channel and North Sea.
