European anti-piracy military operation

Operation Atalanta, formally EUNAVFOR ATALANTA, is an ongoing European Union (EU) military operation contributing to maritime security in the West Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. Launched on 8 December 2008 as the EU’s first naval operation, it was initially established to protect World Food Programme (WFP) vessels and other vulnerable shipping, and to deter, prevent and repress piracy and armed robbery off Somalia.
