Battle of Aquae Sextiae
Battle during the Cimbrian War (102 BC)
The Battle of Aquae Sextiae (Aix-en-Provence) took place in 102 BC. After a series of Roman defeats at the Battle of Noreia, the Battle of Burdigala, and most notably at the Battle of Arausio, the Romans under Gaius Marius finally defeated the Teutons and Ambrones as they attempted to advance through the Alps into Italy. Local lore associates the name of the mountain, Mont St.
