What you see

  • Battles and sieges alone, as red conflict marks; History’s panel can bring back the wars and massacres around them.
  • Each battle’s name beside it from zoom 3.
  • A battle’s page and popup give its date, the war it belonged to and its Wikipedia summary.
  • Opened from this page, the map plays the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, 1792 to 1815, over Europe.

Where the data comes from

  • WikidataBattles and sieges with a date and coordinates, and the war each was part of where Wikidata says so.
  • WikipediaAbout 300 battles of the First World War, from Wikipedia’s lists of them.

Taken from Wikidata when the set is imported; a battle added there since appears after the next import.

Good to know

  • Coverage follows Wikipedia’s editors: France, the United States, Spain and Italy alone hold about a quarter of the battles.
  • About a third are placed only at an area, not at the battlefield itself.
  • Battles carry no casualty figures here, so the map draws them all at one size.
  • Military operations, raids and air strikes have a page of their own.
