What you see

  • Each one as a conflict mark sized by the number killed, which nearly three in four records give.
  • A page for each, with its date, the toll and its Wikipedia summary.
  • Opened from this page, the map plays 1900 to today.

Where the data comes from

  • WikidataItems that are massacres, genocides or pogroms, with a date, a place and, for most, a death toll; 95% have a Wikipedia article.
  • WikidataAbout 150 expulsions, deportations and forced displacements, with a date and a place.

Taken from Wikidata when the sets are imported; an entry added or corrected there since appears after the next import.

Good to know

  • More than four in five are from 1900 or later: the record follows what Wikipedia’s editors have written about.
  • Whether an event is called a massacre, a genocide or a pogrom follows Wikidata’s classification, not a court’s ruling.
  • A toll is the figure Wikidata holds, and many are disputed; the article gives the context.
  • About half are placed only at an area, not an exact site.
