What you see

  • Each war as a single mark that stays on the map while the war lasts, then fades.
  • Where a source counts the dead, the mark grows with the toll.
  • A war’s page lists the battles it included, and every source that records it.
  • Opened from this page, the map plays 1900 to 2000 in about a minute.

Where the data comes from

  • WikidataWars, civil wars, rebellions and revolts with a date and a place: most of the list, nearly all with a Wikipedia article.
  • Correlates of WarInter-state wars from 1823 to 2003, with their battle deaths.
  • UCDPArmed conflicts since 1989 with their battle-related deaths, from the Uppsala Conflict Data Program.
  • Global Wars & Armed Conflicts, 1914–2026A compilation of the 20th and 21st centuries’ wars published on Kaggle, with deaths; its own sources are not stated.

Each source is imported as published; UCDP adds a year at a time.

Good to know

  • A war is one point: the coordinates Wikidata gives it, the middle of its battles, or the middle of the countries that fought it. Nine in ten are placed only at an area or a country.
  • Where two sources record the same war, TAKIP merges the ones it can match; the war’s page names each source.
  • Only about one war in nine has a death toll, so most are drawn at one size.
