What you see

  • Attacks as orange marks sized by the number killed, which GTD gives for nearly all of them.
  • Where a view holds more than 2,000 attacks they gather into counted bubbles; zoom in to see each one.
  • Click an attack for the weapon, the target, whether it was carried out and claimed, and GTD’s own summary.
  • Opened from this page, the map plays 1970 to 2017.

Where the data comes from

  • Global Terrorism DatabaseSTART’s record of attacks from 1970 to 2017: place, weapons, targets, casualties and a short summary of each.
  • WikidataAbout 800 attacks from before 1970 and after 2017, each with a Wikipedia article.

GTD’s data here ends in 2017; later attacks come only from Wikidata, so recent years are thin.

Good to know

  • What counts as terrorism follows GTD’s definition: violence by non-state actors for a political, economic, religious or social goal.
  • There is no 1993: GTD lost its records for that year.
  • Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India hold about a third of the attacks.
  • About one in seven is placed only at the city or region.
