What it is

The nearest large cluster of galaxies, some 1,300 of them round the giant elliptical M87, whose black hole was the first ever imaged. The Local Group lies on its outskirts.

Placed by its redshift, at the distance the expansion has carried it to by now; the dots around it are galaxies of the 2MASS and SDSS surveys, placed the same way.

Virgo Cluster

The Virgo Cluster is a cluster of galaxies whose center is 53.8 ± 0.3 Mly away in the constellation Virgo. Comprising approximately 1,300 member galaxies, the cluster forms the heart of the larger Virgo Supercluster, of which the Local Group is a member. The Local Group actually experiences the mass of the Virgo Supercluster as the Virgocentric flow.
