Hazards
Active fires
Heat detected by NASA satellites in the last 24 hours, with official fire perimeters in the US and incidents in Canada, on one map.
What you see
- Hotspots from the VIIRS instruments on Suomi NPP, NOAA-20 and NOAA-21.
- Click a hotspot for its brightness, fire radiative power, how many satellites saw it, and when.
- US fire perimeters from NIFC with size and containment, and Canadian incidents from CWFIS and the BC Wildfire Service.
Where the data comes from
- NASA FIRMSFire hotspots from the last 24 hours of satellite passes.
- NIFCWildfire perimeters across the United States.
- CWFIS and BC Wildfire ServiceFire incidents across Canada.
- NASA EONETActive volcanoes.
FIRMS is read every 30 minutes and perimeters every 10. Hotspots load when you open the map, so reload for the latest.
Good to know
- A hotspot is heat seen from orbit: a wildfire, a farm burn, a gas flare or a volcano. It is not a confirmed fire.
- When there are more than 5,000 hotspots, the strongest half is kept and the rest are sampled.
- Active volcanoes from NASA EONET are drawn as hotspots too; their brightness and power figures are placeholders, not satellite readings.
